Perfect example of the humblebrag: standing around looking like a supercool sexgod & complaining about standing around looking like a supercool sexgod.

But he does that most of the time, doesn't he? Except when he's sitting around instead.

The expression on his face would be understandable if he'd been stuck waiting with me! "Wait...wait...just let me draw one more cartoon for you, K??"

You can draw cartoons for him, you can draw cartoons of him, but please to not draw cartoons on him.

Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me!

Daniel finished his short hike to the lookout and walked back into the mountain. The exercise had cleared his mind and he now had several leads he could follow to make sense of the translation. His mind was busy with proto-Elamite cognates and Akkadian root forms when he was brought up short by the fact that the door to the elevator down into the lowest floors of the complex was propped open with a giant wrench, and the car was occupied already by Sam Carter and Sly Siler, both focused intently on the control panel, which they had opened and were working on.

"Try it now, ma'am," Siler was saying.

Sam looked at the screen of some little handheld computer-like device she was holding, and tapped a few buttons.

"It's connecting!" she said in triumph.

Daniel cleared his throat, drawing their attention.

"You guys want me to take the stairs, or will you be done soon?"

"Oh hi, Daniel!" said Sam. "Now that we've accessed the command system it shouldn't be more than a couple of minutes if you don't mind waiting."

She began to input a series of commands, and lines of code began spooling across the screen of her device. When the lines stopped spooling, she clicked through several screens, apparently checking the success of her work, and then turned to the tech by her side.

"All done, Sergeant. You can disconnect and close it up now."

"Yes, ma'am."

He began a series of manipulations, pulling very small wrenches and screwdrivers from a case by his right knee as they were needed. Finally, he reseated the cover panel, replaced and tightened the screws holding it in place, took the giant wrench from its spot leaning by door and hit the button to close the doors, and - Daniel presumed - the button to re-open them, because the door slid open again a few seconds later.

"All up and running again, ma'am," he said, and exited the car, carrying his case of small tools and the giant wrench and heading for the stairs, where he slid his pass-card, and stepped through the door.

Daniel answered Sam's unspoken question by stepping into the elevator, and she removed her hand from the door she was holding for him, pushed the level for her lab and Daniel's office, and they began the journey back down to the SGC.

"What was that all about?" asked Daniel.

"We were entering new programming," said Sam, but her eyes were gleaming with suppressed humor.

"Why? It's an elevator. How much programming does it need?"

"With the new programming, not only will IDs of medical personnel override others, so response times in emergencies can be improved, but travel rates between the gateroom and the infirmary will be quicker."

"Any other effects?"

A fast trip to the infirmary was just not funny.

"Well, the response time to certain I.D.'s might be increased a bit," she offered slyly.

"This is all about Jack taking that last blue Jello on Tuesday, isn't it."

Sam's smile was wide and guileless. Daniel wasn't fooled.

"You're evil," he said.

And she rocked back and forth on her heels.

When the car arrived at their destination, there was Jack, in his civvies, a jacket flung over his right shoulder, held there by two fingers hooked under the collar. His expression was thunderous.

"It's about time!" he whined. "I'm gonna miss the Simpsons!"

Cutting a direct line through the door into the elevator, forcing his teammates to pivot to the side to avoid being brushed by his wide shoulders, he turned and was slapping the button to take him up to NORAD before Sam and Daniel had fully exited.

"Really evil," reiterated Daniel, his eyes crinkled with amusement.

Sam just smiled. Her large, white, even teeth and her huge doe eyes made it all look so innocent.

Daniel knew better. He wandered off to his office, and this time instead of cognates, he was wondering to himself how long it would take before Jack figured it all out, and what form his retaliation would take.

On second thought, the translations could wait. Daniel needed to have a chat with Teal'c. Jack was right, when Teal'c was left out, he sulked. Not that anyone outside the team would be able to tell, but Jack would. No sense in tipping Sam's hand.

Daniel, contemplating the nature of evil, took the stairs.
