Ellen looked at the small figure in his size 4 slim blue jeans, his striped t-shirt and his heavy dark Buster Browm school shoes moving around the fire, blocks in his hands, ready to throw in from a respectful distance. She knew her boy was smart, but she hadn't known that he was so smart and so persistant that he could find out how to start a fire using friction and actually do it at this age. When and how had he learned to read?

She heard footsteps behind her, and felt strong arms reach around her from behind. She let her head fall back onto her husband's shoulder, and breathed in a calming whiff of his aftershave.

"What's our little Mad Scientist up to now? Working on a nuclear reactor?" he asked.

"Barbeque. He says I work too hard and it's his turn to make dinner 'just like Daddy'!"

"Well, at least he cleared out the grass around where he's working so it doesn't start a fire."

"Yes, but he used the slats of the crib from the barn! Without asking! Oh, Jim!" she wailed "This! This is why I'm just not ready to have another one!"

"Shhh. Shhh. It's okay. No one was hurt. It's only crib slats and... what are those?"

"The alphabet blocks."

"What?!!! Angus Henry MacGyver! You come here right this minute! Those blocks were mine!"

*squeals and flails with glee*

I LOVE the twist you made finding a crib with metal slats! Ha!!

Yeah, I don't think it was an accident, Mac being an only child. Srsly.

Yeah, I know the feeling. All too well. The Whirlwind (see icon - also at age four) is child number four. If she'd been a first child, she wouldn't have siblings either. Not because I don't love her to death and delight in her, because I do, but because I would figure I really didn't have a handle on this parenting thing if she was so hard to control and created such mahem. I have three older kids who prove that I do have a clue, so I guess we're all lucky that it worked out like it did.

Eldest Daughter was one that was designed to sucker the parents into having a dozen more. We just stopped at two (biological) for world population reasons, and at four (total) so we could afford to educate them all.
