deep breaths, now . . .
LJ migrated my Scrapbook yesterday.

I’ve been holding my breath for almost 7 weeks, waiting for the axe to fall. It’s happened now, and, well, it’s even worse than anything I had imagined.

I had over 1500 images in Scrapbook, all tagged and organized and carefully maintained. Effectively, it’s as if the landlord broke into my office last night, dumped out and removed all the filing cabinets, and ran the contents through a wind tunnel. Also, no more file cabinets will ever be available in this location, although the landlord may eventually allow cardboard boxes, when he has time, if ever.

Not to mention the migration report with the long list of lost items – about a 3% failure rate.

I haven’t had the energy to check the LOLMac posts – the archives and the backlinks. I haven’t had the energy to do anything (including scream at LJ, which would be a waste of time anyway, or research alternate photo hosting sites, which might not be a waste). The loss of almost 5 years of work has triggered one of my (fortunately) rare depressive episodes, and I’m having trouble remembering why I’ve been doing this at all.

A bright spot: no actual images have been lost. The originals are all on my own computer, and they’re more redundantly backed up than anything else I own. I still have the master spreadsheet with every record in it of every LOL: source, details, when it was posted, what it links to. I’m not actually wiped out. I just feel as if I am.

I also know I’m overreacting and that this isn’t really all that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, but that knowledge isn’t helping either.

I had used the scheduled post feature to queue up the LOLs for this week, but after today, well, I’m kind of sitting in the middle of the devastation looking stunned and numb. I could really use some help and encouragement, if anyone has the inclination. Just remind me why this was a good idea, and reassure me that it’s worth picking up the pieces and going on. (One note: any version of “I told you so” or “You should have known LJ would f*ck you over” will do me serious damage. Just don’t. Please.)

If you’re feeling truly motivated or fond of pixels: it would really help if someone (or more than one) would page back through the archives, check the backlinks, and generally look to see if the images are still there in the posts. If you feel inclined to leave comments on any of the older stuff, that will definitely provide warm fuzzies (and also prove that they’re there). For that matter, if individual posts have been corrupted but it’s only an occasional item, commenting on the affected posts will both make it much easier for me to fix the damage and also motivate me to fix it.

I’d also be interested in any recommendations for another photo hosting service to use in the future, assuming there is one. (A future, I mean.) I’d prefer a paid one (a hosting service, I mean), to reduce the odds of this happening again. I need the ability to tag, to have galleries based on tagging, to place images in multiple galleries, to view image galleries in thumbnail, and most of all to set images in a specific order and have them stay in that order. I don’t know if the paid version of Photobucket will do this, but I’m not optimistic, since the free version is far short of the mark.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go curl up under a rock and snivel. Gah.

You're doing this because I haven't watched MacGyver in years and lost my love of Stargate at some point, and your caps and silly loltalk reminds me each time again just how wonderful RDA and these shows are and how much I've loved them for years and years (seriously, I've been watching MacGyver since I was five, it was literally my childhood and I wanted to be MacGyver when I grew up!) and your lolmacs just bring this all back even if I don't comment often.

In other words, lolmac = ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥!

EDIT: I've done a random check, about 5-6 lols from each year, haven't found any corrupted item - everything loaded fine.

You were the first to reply, and you said everything that I most needed to hear. THANK YOU.

I love you.

Just sayin'!

it goes without saying

No, I don't think you're over-reacting: it's a big deal in *your* scheme of things and I'm not surprised. It's always ghastly to have anything creative trashed :-(

I lurk more often than I should, but your LOLs are always a bright spot in my day :-) I love the horrible puns (I'm a HUGE fan of horrible puns!) and I've always loved looking at images of Da Man, natch, so your talents and SOH are manna from heaven.

So. Would a virtual gin and tonic be any help? Or a bottle of gin and three of tonic? A crate of each? Or just some sympathetic virtual hugs and a voodoo doll of LJ with some *very* long, blunt pins?
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:04 (UTC) (Link)
Virtual gin and tonic very nice indeed! Fans of horrible puns even nicer! THANK YOU. Let the horrible puns continue.

Oh my gosh that sucks. I love the LOLs and look forward to seeing the new ones.

Hope it gets sorted for you. (Sorry I'm not that technical, I can barely work out my own LJ at the best of times! Otherwise I'd definitely help).

Your being here helps. Very truly. Thank you!!

I just did a quick fast-forward from the beginning of the gallery to the end of Feb 2008, and all those pics were there. I didn't check any links, though.

Mmm, puns. Hand pr0n. Hairdos (and don'ts.) ;-)

I don't think you're overreacting. It's been a labor of love, but it's still laborious, and it's been swept away without any regard for all you've done. In five years it'll all be water under the bridge, but you wouldn't be human if it won't still make you grind your teeth even then!
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:17 (UTC) (Link)
More puns and handpron it shall be. And hair dos and don'ts. Thank you!!
thothmes From: thothmes Date: 21st June 2012 22:06 (UTC) (Link)
I sent you a message yesterday to let you know how unfair it is that such a nasty thing is happening to such a nice person. And you know what, you are not overreacting. You spent hours maintaining things, and doing it right. At their convenience, in a way that you had no control over, it was largely undone. You deserve to feel angry, shocked, and depressed. There's nothing wrong with your feelings. Where the character rubber meets the road, however, is in how you cope with them, and you have character. You will find a way to turn disaster into triumph, because you have a track record of turning it into either knowledge that helps yourself and others, or a triumphant win.

You do this because you have learned, with hard-fought experience, that life gives us a choice when we are faced with hard times: we can cry, or we can laugh, and laughter is better when it is shared. It spreads, and multiplies. Take a look at your statistics, and see the number of hits, and compare that to the comments. There is a vast quiet mass out there whose day you have improved that you never even hear from. You help them get through their day with a smile on their face, and you, of all people, know what a precious thing that is.

I have no good info as to an alternate hosting solution, but pm not_a_zatarc, because I seem to remember that a while ago she was asking if we out here knew of a good place to host, because she'd reached her limit on the free version of Photobucket. I may have been wrong that it was her, so be sure to mention me as the culprit who sent you in case he she was not the person asking, and my memory was mistaken.

I will promise to start going through Lolmacs starting tonight, but it might help if you did a separate post for people to sign up to do a given block (maybe in 1/2 year or 1/4 year chunks) so that we can all be going through a separate section, and not duplicating someone else's work?

I'm so sorry this happened to you, and I suspect that you may find that you have earned enormous good will out there, and that there will be plenty of people who want to pitch in.

You have given me much joy. Point me at a section, and I'll try to give you some.

When you're ready, Beth. I'll sign on.

Just chiming in to say you are ABSOLUTELY NOT overreacting. Also wanted to say I don't comment nearly as often as I should, but I *love* every Mac post. Love the pretty, the commentary, the bad puns - EVERYTHING. Sometimes it's the only bright spot in my day, especially after work, and I would miss it terribly if it were gone.

*hugs you*

There will be more pretty.

It's something that you care about, that you have put time and energy into, and a force beyond your control has come in and messed it all up. Anyone would be upset by that. Allow yourself to be sad, and don't get down on yourself for feeling down about it.

That said -- optimism! You have the images. You have the audience. You still have a platform. And you can still make new Lolmacs and post them. You can handle this. It will be all right.

lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:44 (UTC) (Link)

Thank you!!

LOLMac is one of the things I check in the morning, because you usually post about when I'm on the way to work. So I load my work email, load LJ, giggle, think of something witty to say if I can, and my work day is off to such a better start than it would be otherwise. Thank you for being the force behind it.

Besides, and, etc, and a bottle of ginger liqueur later... it's such a nice way for me to pop up and say hi when I can!
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:51 (UTC) (Link)

I'll drink to that

Thank you, my friend. Onward!

Lurking lagomorph here.

1-you are not overreacting. This sucks.

2-I love you and LOLMACS. I would be sad if LOLMACs had to go, but I want you to be happy and if you need to take a break, so be it. We will be here when you return. *HUG*

3-you'll get through this. I'll see if I can carve out some time to check LOLs later tonight, but my computer is sketchy, so I'll have to see if it lets me.
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:47 (UTC) (Link)

lucky lagomorph

Thothmes, bless her amazing persistence, went through the whole damned archive and logged the glitches. There were surprisingly few. o_O It may take some time before I get things cleaned up, but I'm back to making new LOLs.

******HUGE HUGE HUGE MASSIVE HUGS from me, Patrick, DD & Dak!****** We love you and hope you will keep doing what you do so damn well. The happiness and pure joy you bring through your humor and talent is what keeps us all sane.

Love always,

I LOVE LOLmac! Both you and this journal :-) It is totally worth it!

*hands you a roll of duct tape, a box of paperclips and several sticks of chewing gum* Just ask yourself this: WWMD?

*hugs you lots*
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:49 (UTC) (Link)

Hmmm. Can I make a bomb out of the stick of chewing gum and blow up anything? No, that's more Jack's style.

Duct tape it is.

My internet is a bit sketchy and slow lately, due to our provider (the only DSL currently available where we live) being unreliable. Aren't monopolies fun?

Anyway, moving back slowly, and refreshing repeatedly, I got from today to skip=320 with no problems or disasters. I'll keep working. I may be a bit of an ant with a rubber tree, but eventually I'll get there.

I just wanted you to know, I did keep my promise as much as conditions allow.
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:50 (UTC) (Link)
You are a PHENOMENON. But you already knew that.

studyofrunning From: studyofrunning Date: 22nd June 2012 09:31 (UTC) (Link)
That's really terrible of LJ. They had to know this was going to break a lot of people's work. I can't blame you at all for being upset over this.
lolmac From: lolmac Date: 24th June 2012 02:56 (UTC) (Link)
I'm picking up the pieces again now, although it will be a while before I can face some of the necessary cleanup. For now, I'm making new LOLs, and that's a very Good Thing.
lost_spook From: lost_spook Date: 22nd June 2012 11:22 (UTC) (Link)
Aw, no, it's understandable to be upset and annoyed when something's so messed up.

And while I'm someone who friended you for, well, you, rather than RDA, they still often make me smile in passing on my flist.

(this icon, btw, I only use when I really mean it. It is not one I use lightly and without thought. Except when it happens by accident, but that is not the case right now.)
