Ah. Sit here beside this sparkling brook, and I shall expound.

Like any properly ineffable concept, the mystical Trout is hard to explain comprehensively. It began with Lothithil the Very Wise, who mentored me in my long steep path back to fanfic. She would occasional smack me with a virtual trout when I had need of such correction. Eventually, I achieved Enlightenment. She still whacks me with trout when necessary, but now I smack her back as needed.

If that made any sense at all, you probably haven’t had enough sleep in the last week.

I could simply tell you that it’s a combination of a long running joke and a high level of mutually affectionate support, but that’s not as amusing. And it’s equally true. The trout may be applied for inspiration, correction, castigation, or as a reminder not to wallow in self-pity or self-abnegation. It may also be presented as a trophy, prize, or commemoration, or used in any other suitable manner. Occasionally, other fish are used; at some point in the running exchange, I acquired a squid for a sidekick.

The ineffable and mystical concept of the Trout has begun to enlighten me, in that, in spite of getting enough sleep, that actually made sense to me.

Sort of.

My own path back into actually finishing ANY fanfic may possibly require the application of many fish, but I kind of swim upstream, fighting my creative muses, on my own.

I signed up for a fanfiction community...challenge-ish thing, a few days ago but I have yet to dig in and start writing it. ...this would be trout-time since I'm just being lazy.

Does the squid have a name?

The squid is called Squiddy. (Obviously, not one of my more imaginative moments.)

We refer to Squiddy as 'he', but we don't actually know. At one point, Lothi offered Squiddy the choice of a lipstick and a TV remote control, as a gender test; he took both. He may be a dyke, or a transvestite. Or a performance artist.

Which community did you join, out of curiosity?

I need a sidekick eventually.

The community I joined is au_bigbang. You can scroll through the writer signups (I think--I don't think they're screened) if you wanna see the details (or I can tell you/whatever ^^), but my idea that I'm working on for it is complicated sort of playing with my really watered down understanding of multiverse theory and kind of fix-ficcing the problems I had with Forever in a Day. Also, playing with Daniel/Sha're AND Daniel/Jack in my plot (hopefully if the muses cooperate the way I hope they shall) will be a plus.
